RRN Joins NCCC in Advancing Nigeria's Commitment to Climate Action
Sep 13th 2023

In a one-day technical stakeholder engagement aimed at shaping the future of Nigeria's climate action, we had the privilege of participating and contributing to the draft document of the National Action Plan on Climate Change, set to be unveiled in 2024. This gathering provided a platform for collaboration, learning, and understanding the vision and strategies set forth by the National Council on Climate Change for this ambitious initiative.

One of our distinguished representatives was a part of the third cohort of interns currently undergoing their internship with EnviroNews Nigeria. The virtual Cohort program was meticulously designed to empower young individuals through #climateeducation, followed by post-program internships, with the ultimate goal of nurturing a new generation of climate innovators. As a result, 25 talented participants from this Cohort program seamlessly transitioned into intern roles, ready to make significant contributions to the field of climate action.

The one-day technical session, hosted by the National Council on Climate Change and led by Director General SALISU DAHIRU, is poised to accomplish several pivotal objectives, with a primary focus on, but not restricted to, the following three:

The action plan's core components will encompass a comprehensive suite: a carbon budget, an emissions framework, a carbon registry, and the introduction of carbon taxes and levies.

Operating on a five-year attainment cycle, the plan sets an ambitious target for full establishment by 2024.

Crucially, this plan harmonizes with the broader mission of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060, in perfect alignment with the current administration's agenda, the long-term-led document, and the goals outlined in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

In closing, a momentous announcement from the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) illuminated the session: Nigeria has secured approval to implement the National Stocktake on Climate Change, making Nigeria the first African country to undertake a comprehensive national stocktake on climate change—an extraordinary milestone in the country's climate action journey.
