Revamp Rave Network Joins Collaborative Workshop to Advancing Climate and Disaster Risk Assessment in Nigeria
Nov 12th 2023

Revamp Rave Network was present as one of the key stakeholders at the just concluded workshop on climate risk and disaster assessment organized by the National Climate Change Council of Nigeria, in partnership with the Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA).

The two-day workshop on Climate and Disaster Risk Assessment for Nigeria focused on crucial aspects of climate risk management and financing, aligning strategies with Nigeria's Sustainable Development to meet the Net-Zero Emission Goals.

The National Council on Climate Change actively fulfilled the goal of the programme by identifying key priorities for significant interventions and the mitigation of climate change. A crucial step in this direction is coordinating an in-country climate and disaster risk assessment, with the overarching goal of developing a comprehensive National Climate Change Action Plan.

The workshop's primary objective was to implement a climate risk assessment report for Nigeria. The specific goals included:

a) Informing relevant stakeholders about the Council's dedication to developing a comprehensive climate and disaster risk assessment report for the country.

b) Developing a core understanding of program objectives, particularly in promoting Food Systems resilience and Disaster Risk Management for Sovereign and Sub-sovereign natural hazard risks in Nigeria.

c) Accelerating collaborations on the development of open-source climate and disaster risk modelling tools, as well as the distribution of risk data analytics and insights to enhance climate risk preparedness among stakeholders.

d) Identifying areas of knowledge gaps within stakeholders and addressing capacity-building needs.

e) Leveraging learnings and synergies to aid government and the organized private sector decision-making in building a climate-forward economy.

The stakeholders present contributed to the critical review of the current status of research, policies, and practices related to disaster risk management in Nigeria, considering the existing institutional framework in the country with other MDAs and organisations present.

The event emphasized the need for bridging policy and research gaps through the effective implementation of necessary frameworks.

The urgency of national action was underscored, given that the cost of inaction is projected to be between 2%-11% of GDP by 2024 and 6%-30% by 2050. Historical information was acknowledged as incomplete, highlighting the imperative for swift and decisive measures.

The success of the workshop was made possible through the active participation of key stakeholders, including UNDP Nigeria, the German Embassy, NEMA Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Environment and many other stakeholders present.

Their collective efforts contributed significantly to advancing climate action in Nigeria and building a resilient and sustainable future.
